SETS S-SET FAREWELL TOUR

SUNDAY 21ST JULY 2019 !

SETS, in conjunction with Sydney Trains and Transport Heritage, will be operating the S-set farewell enthusiasts' tour from 12:30 pm Sunday 21st July 2019. The trip will be 6 hours long and will depart from Central and conclude at Strathfield. The trip will include North Sydney Car Sidings and many other destinations. This will be the very last revenue service S-set operation. See our tour page for details.

A major announcement is expected to be made on the day. While SETS has been working with Sydney Trains on this event for the last 12 months, we also apologise for the limited notice, due to circumstances beyond our control.

The day will include a separately ticketed media-spectacle triple parallel-run in the morning (not involving SETS) with the preserved Sydney Trains red set, the S-set we are using in the afternoon, and the newest Waratah set B24. See HERE for more information on the other event.

8649 new at Lithgow in 1985 SETS 8649 To Be Reactivated To Join 8606 !

SETS and Pacific National have agreed to reactivate a second 86 class electric locomotive - 8649 - with the project now underway.

8649 has been stored outside at Werris Creek for many years and it is planned to commence preparatory works at the Werris Creek Maintenance Centre run by Progress Rail (Pacific National's maintenance contractor). The loco will then be moved to Cardiff workshops for underframe examination and test powering-up. The project will involve SETS personnel, Pacific National staff, Progress Rail staff and specialist firms.

8649 is considered to be in fair condition overall but it will need overhaul of some major equipment items, including some rotating machinery and brake system components. The locomotive was last operated in 1997 and thus the project will be a significantly bigger undertaking than the relatively quick initial reactivation of 8606, which had been stored indoors since 2003.

New SETS magnetic-stripe tickets SETS To Introduce Magnetic-Stripe Ticketing On Tours !

Sydney's magnetic-stripe ticketing system and TravelPass will continue in operation on SETS and HCVA excursions. SETS have arranged a new production run of magnetic-stripe Excursion Day-Rover tickets as illustrated. SETS is now able to issue and validate magnetic-stripe tickets, to both the public and enthusiasts, on our special event bus and train excursions.

The reintroduced STATS system and our new ticket stock was first trialed on the HCVA's MAN midi night wharves tour held on 28th June 2019. This was the first time since 1st August 2016 where Sydney bus passengers could use magnetic stripe tickets in a green machine. The original equipment was reinstalled in the preserved MAN 3683 bus by SETS.

8606 Fleet News

Information about SETS' 8606 and events in its life, as currently the only operational electric locomotive in NSW...

In case you are wondering, it has taken the skills of around 30 people from 8 organisations to recommission 8606 and keep it in service. Our thanks to everyone who has helped, particulary to Pacific National, Progress Rail, Lithgow Railway Workshops and SETS members and volunteers. Also thanks to all our supporters and photographers. Yes, a passenger trip is being worked on.
