Sesqui-Centenary Tour

Saturday 28th May this year saw two SETS "U-boat" motor cars hauled by SETS electric locomotive 4615 along with three other 3801 limited carriages on a tour to Lewisham, Wyong, Olympic Park and Springwood. The two "U-boat", CF5003 and CF5021, are currently under restoration to work under their own power. The tour was designed to celebrate 150th anniversary of the first ever passenger train in NSW, to inspect the completed viaduct at Lewisham (which has since been replaced). 4615 and the U-boat cars travelled from their home at Hornsby for Eveleigh to pick up the extra carriages, and then on to Central to collect the tour patrons.

Here we present some images captured during the tour, which commenced via the Lewisham viaduct to Wyong, then back down via Epping and out to Springwood, with a detour through Olympic Park. Also included are images of the transfer movement from Hornsby to Eveleigh. On this trip, lack of overhead power on the Goods line at Canterbury led to the locomotive and carriages being propelled by diesel-electric locomotive NR 107 through to Sydenham. This is believed to be the first time an NR class lcomotive has been used in association with a heritage operation. The loco was on its way to Central to haul the Indian Pacific out of Sydney.
