VINTAGE DIESEL ACTION
Once the mainstay of the New South Wales main lines, the venerable 44 and 45 class ALCO locomotives were rare beasts by the time the 21st century was half way through its first decade. This celebration of the smoky streamliner and its upright cousin focuses on three memorable tours on the scenic but now closed Mudgee line: 4486/4401 to Mudgee on 26 January 2005, 4471/4486/4401/4473 to Kandos on 28 January 2006 and 4501/4486 to Kandos on 4 February 2007.
In this production we get to follow each tour from morning to evening, from the Blue Mountains to the lush valleys of the Mudgee region and from one claggy notch to another. Under sunny postcard skies and over weathered wooden bridges we get to see a variety of liveries from the classic reverse and “Western” Tuscan to the contemporary colours of CFCLA. But best of all we get to savour the moment when the clear air of the Capertee Valley resonated to the throb of these classic units. Who knows if such a moment shall pass again?
