Come and join SETS for a day out with a difference as we explore
the disused shale railway of the Wolgan Valley, including a visit to a
glow worm tunnel and the remains of the former Newnes township
and oil shale mining complex.
The Newnes oil-shale industrial development, constructed in the
early 1900s and was connected by rail to the Main Western Line at
Newnes Junction, some 50 km south of Newnes township.
The tour will commence at 7:00am at Strathfield station (Everton
Road). A lunch stop will be made in Lithgow with a return to
Strathfield by 8:30pm.
For those who wish to travel by train, we will pick up passengers off
the train due to arrive at Bell at 8:19am at 8:50am and set down passengers
at Mount Victoria in time for the service to Sydney, departing at 5:06pm.
Please note, if you are travelling on either of these rail services, you
will need a valid City Rail ticket for this part of your journey.
This tour will involve walking through a tunnel that is
approximately 400 metres long that has an uneven surface. We
recommend warm clothing, closed footwear and to bring a torch.
Light refreshments will be available on board!
