Come and ride behind our 46 class loco on board a vintage train for a
fun day out.
Built by Metropolitan-Vickers & Beyer-Peacock in Britain, 4615 was
landed in Sydney on 15th November 1956 and entered service on 21st
January 1957. It had an operational life of nearly 39 years before
retirement on 17th January 1996. It was sold for preservation on 20th
April 1998.
Our all day tour will feature 4615 hauling a consist of vintage
carriages with lift-up windows. Our route will cover some suburban and
interurban lines that have not recently seen electric locomotive hauled
trains. Relive the days when 46 class electric locos hauled the
Newcastle Flyer - "the fast, convenient, and comfortable means of travel". It will
be an enthusiast's event not to be missed.
Additional highlights of the trip will include the City Railway
(underground) to Wynyard, crossing the Harbour Bridge and a visit to
Lavender Bay Car Sidings.
Numerous photo stops have also been allowed along the route.
Our tour will commence with an 8:37 am departure from Central,
proceeding to Cronulla via the Illawarra Line. At Cronulla there is a
break of 40 minutes while the loco changes ends. We then return to
Central and on to the Waverton neck
via the North Shore underground line and Harbour Bridge. The train will
then proceed down to Lavender Bay.
We then travel to Newcastle via the North Shore (and Main North from
Hornsby). At Newcastle there is a 39 minute break while the loco changes
ends. We will make an express return from Newcastle - running non-stop
to Hornsby (6:54), thence Strathfield (7:17). Our trip will conclude at
Central around 7:32 pm.
